'Switched-On Yule' is an ongoing project that combines my interest in electronic music with my affection for Christmas carols - generally older and less well-known ones that were my family's preference while I was growing up.

Here's a current playlist of all tracks; for more information, see individual posts...

There are (at least) two settings for this lyric by Edmund H. Sears; I’ve always preferred this lovely one by Richard S. Willis (1819-1900). Once again I’ve used the classic Alfred Deller recording as a springboard. My version uses samples from the Hammond Novachord and the Moog Multimoog alongside more modern textures from Native Instruments Massive and AAS String Studio.

It Came Upon the Midnight Clear by tobiastinker

“One of the first Christmas hymns written by an American writer and published in the Christian Register in 1849, “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” emphasizes the social implications of the angels’ message: achieving peace and good will toward our fellowmen in the midst of social difficulty. The writing of this text occurred at a time in American history when there was much unrest, including the foreboding of the tensions between the North and Southern States, social upheaval due to industrial revolution, and the time of the “Forty-niner” gold rush.”

“In 1928 the seemingly indefatigable Ralph Vaughan Williams collaborated on The Oxford Book of Carols with Martin Shaw and the Rev. Percy Dearmer. The composer arranged a good many hymns for the project and provided original tunes for four, including for Wither’s Rocking Hymn, which appeared as No. 185 in the book. Its title comes from the author of the text, George Wither (1588 - 1667).” ~ Robert Cummings

My arrangement features the Hammond Novachord and Theremin, as well as several more modern textures…

A lovely old Czech carol that is another family favorite. The illustrious Novachord is again in the lead, with some Moog added to the brew to help bring it a bit closer to the Switched-On aesthetic, though still with some more modern textures and something of my own style…

My second piece for this project is an old family favorite, the ‘Coventry Carol’, also sometimes known as ‘Lully, Lullay’ - a kind of lullaby, very haunting. Wikipedia has some information on the history of the tune, which dates from the 16th century:

Our best-loved rendition is from Alfred Deller’s wonderful collection ‘The Holly and the Ivy’… my own version is perhaps a bit more adventurous, with some darker textures (again from the Novachord) and bell tones. Without further ado:

Switched-On Yule: 12 Days of Electronic Christmas!

(a tobias tinker project)

Hello and thanks for dropping by! Welcome to Switched-On Yule! … please check out my ‘About’ page above for more details on the project…

Track one is a reading of ‘Oh Come Emmanuel’ with the Hammond Novachord in the lead role, with some Mellotron and more modern physically-modelled textures thrown in for good measure… I hope you like it, and stay tuned for future installments!
